In Mumbai, nurse Prabha is distraught when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Her younger roommate, Anu, tries in vain to find a place in the city to make friends with her boyfriend. The first Indian film to be screened at Cannes in 30 years. The dreamy score that meanders through the length of this loose film, played with bleak imagery that evokes nostalgic despair, is a joy to watch. I was more fascinated by the creators' attention to detail in creating a Bombay that defies popular image and instead showcases its delightful character. Three women struggle to navigate their lonely lives in the city as the camera follows them through public spaces and into their private lives. I could relate to the characters, having lived in Bombay for decades, but the film gets a bit muddled towards the end and you could blame me for losing track there. Overall a good experience thanks to the soundtrack and good use of text design (especially the red font). (Watched it at its Bombay premiere at the 2024 MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.). See the full lineup for the 62nd New York Film Festival this fall.
