Chronology
After months of isolation, Isherwood "Ish" Williams discovers that much of the world has contracted a mysterious disease. However, despite his instincts to remain isolated, Ish is the leader of a new civilization.
The novel was written in the late 1940s, after the end of World War II

The version I have on my shelf is copyrighted 1947, but Wikipedia says 1949
The impression of the story is that 80 years ago someone wrote about a global pandemic and its possible effects on humans. Ish represents the reader, someone who hasn’t had to watch people die, watch the news, feel despair and defeat.
It is closely related to the poem of Ozymandias
Those he meets represent the ways in which people might cope with this enormous loss. The fragility of man and the bravery of humanity in its conquests.
