Her bold approach leaves its mark on students and families
Brussels teacher Amal encourages her students' passion for reading and freedom of expression despite the risks. I saw this at the 2023 film festival in Ghanti (Belgium). First, I have to admit that I started off on the wrong foot for at least the first half of the running time. I felt a little disconnected from the story: do they have something they want to tell us?? It is truly unfortunate that religious fanaticism and fundamentalism have an overwhelming influence on many people, so much so that they seek to intimidate or even eliminate those who do not believe in any way.
Also now positive
My initial problem with the story at hand was that I incorrectly assumed that the filmmakers were trying to tell us that there are people who place the Quran and Sharia above national laws and thus ignore what we consider normal (we call it “civilized”). tolerant of other beliefs. I am now corrected because I know they were not preaching. I was fascinated, first of all, by the believable actors and even the believable circumstances in the school where a significant part of the story takes place. The same goes for the parents and the neighborhood, which could be located in any big city in any country.
Thirdly, we also see the powerful influence of social media
For me, the development gained real traction in the twists and turns of some unexpected events that kept the story afloat and myself interested in the proceedings. Secondly, I was also taken by the growing problems of the teachers and the school director, which became more complex with each subsequent stage. meeting. The basic issues become apparent and drive the story forward, unfortunately without a clear way out. The meetings deeply involved me in the events and also showed how difficult it is to decide on a balanced approach to the issues on the agenda.
Here there are not only direct threats
Also, everyone talking about you without knowing the real facts, but still forming opinions that spread like wildfire. It’s easy to like a post even if you don’t completely agree with it, it can be done quickly without thinking. Also, writing negative text is also very easy, and this is reinforced by the anonymity that comes with unverified accounts. It all adds up to an unbridled media storm. Before the internet, we had the churchyard, the butcher’s shop and the pub for exchanging gossip, no we have a much faster way with greater reach and speed.
We see believable characters in their roles, even unsympathetic ones
There is no happy ending though, presumably given the circumstances of Mission Impossible. It doesn’t leave us with a solution, but is there any?? All in all, not a documentary that shows that fundamentalists are becoming more and more of a problem, as I’m sure the filmmakers now know we already knew. It’s a real-life story about a real-life school and its surroundings, real teachers and real students whose families are also involved.
