Julie is a star player at an elite tennis academy. When their coach comes under investigation and is suddenly suspended, every player at the club is encouraged to speak out. But Julie decides to … Read all. Belgium’s official competition for 'Best International Feature Film' Category of the 97th Academy Awards in 2025. This is not a good movie. It’s a pretty good story though. But the script could have done with some tweaking. It’s like they thought of some scenes and then just bypassed them. It has some good scenes (the cafe confrontation comes to mind), but not enough to keep this thing afloat. The actors are all at the top of their game. Especially the young semi-tennis pro who plays Julie. He really does his best with the material he gives. But that’s not enough either. Too many questions remain unanswered:
What really happened between Julie and Jeremy? Why are you listening? One minute he’s having problems with the new coach, the next he’s the only one training him (I mean what the actual F..?)
So story-wise, it’s just a big fail! But here comes my biggest problem with this movie. This director just doesn’t know how to make a movie!! Framing is just and wrong. The lighting doesn’t exist. There were shadows everywhere. In one scene, you can only make out two silhouettes talking to each other. It never cuts into a scene between different subjects. It’s like they only have one camera. Now maybe (and I’m just guessing here) that this brings peace and tranquility to his film. But it was annoying as hell for me. And if you choose not to cut into your film, by all means stay in a master shot and let us (the audience) glance at it and look where we want/need to. No, this director decides himself, we don’t need this information. So in many scenes we see people talking to others whose heads are (half) cut off, or you can simply make out half of their faces. What do they teach in film school these days??!!This movie was also shot on an Iphone??!! When I saw Nicolas Karakatsanis DOP in this, my mouth dropped! He really phoned (pun intended) this one. Sometimes it was simply unwatchable. To me, this boils down to one of two things:
This director either doesn’t master the basics of filmmaking or simply doesn’t care. Maybe he just wants to tell his stories. And that’s fine. But film is a visual medium. And it was just mishandled here. And I, as a paying customer, want more.
