Norway’s official submission for the 'Best International Feature Film' category at the 97th Academy Awards in 2025
Chronology
Armand, a 6-year-old boy, is accused of trespassing against his best friend in elementary school.
The debut feature film by Halfdan Ullman Tønder, grandson of Ingmar Bergman and Liv Ullman, is a part-allegorical, part-naturalistic dissection of the 21st-century parenting and education system, and their management of a " “unfortunate accident” between two 6-year-olds
Renate Reinsve is the eccentric mother of Armand, the alleged culprit of the accident, and as she finds herself scrutinized by her son’s teacher, the school administration, and the parents of the other boy, the film slowly descends into an interrelational abyss – a limbo from which no good can ever emerge.
Ullman Tønder’s purpose and stance are strong, as is his artistic expression, which is clearly inspired by the works of his grandfather and perhaps even to some extent by Kubrick
And although the narrative itself sometimes seems disjointed and the film unevenly edited, Armand is in many ways a return and homage to pure cinema, for which it should be acclaimed.
