While a rich Swedish family celebrates its patriarch Alexander (Erland Josephson, cries and whispers), the news of the burst of World War II arrives at his remote Baltic Island, and the happy mood becomes horror. The family descends to a state of psychological devastation, brilliantly evokes by the luminous gray palette of Tarkovsky about the gloomy landscape around his home. (The master cinematography of the film is by Sven Nykvist, a lifelong collaborator of Ingmar Bergman). For Alexander, a philosopher concerned about the lack of spirituality of man, the possibility of a certain extinction forces the final sacrifice, and enters a Faustian bargain with God to save his loved ones from fear that grabs them. The director’s last film, made while dying of cancer, sacrifice is Tarkovsky’s personal statement, a deeply moving tragedy and redeeming impregnated with unforgettable images and heartbreaking emotions.
