Roper Dryer Troubleshooting and Problems

Troubleshoot a Roper Dryer That Will Not Start

  1. Confirm that the dryer’s power cord is connected to a grounded outlet. Unplug the cord and examine it for any damage possibly caused by rodents, pinching or heavy objects. If you find evidence of damage, have the cord replaced by a professional.
  2. Verify the circuit breaker to the dryer circuit has not tripped. In the electrical service panel for your home, look for a tripped circuit switch positioned between the “On” and “Off” positions. Firmly push the switch all the way to the “Off” setting and then firmly push it back to the “On” setting. A correctly reset breaker emits a snapping sound when turned back on. If there are two circuit breakers, check both switches.
  3. Check for a blown fuse in older homes that have fuse boxes. The fuse displays a smoky look and a burned metal strip. If there are two fuses, check both items. Replace if needed.
  4. Examine the dryer’s panel door to verify it is closed firmly. If the door stays ajar or some item prevents the door from staying closed, the dryer will not start. Keep the door closed by firmly pressing against the door until you hear a click sound. Avoid slamming the door to minimize wear and tear. If the door fails to stay closed, check the condition of the metal latch and the plastic strike that holds the latch. Another potential problem source is a worn door switch located in the upper right of the front panel. Replace a missing or bent door switch.
  5. Look at the cycle control knob on the dryer to verify it is not pointed to “Off.” Rotate the cycle control knob to move the black marker away from the “Off” section to the preferred cycle, such as “Timed Dry,” “No Heat Fluff” or “Auto Sense Dry.” If you press the “Start” button while the black marker on the cycle control knob still points to “Off,” a loud buzzing sound alerts you to select the cycle before you press the “Push to Start” button. Do not attempt to start the dryer in the “Wrinkle Guard” position, as it will not start.
  6. Test the “Push to Start” button by pressing firmly to begin the cycle. If this button is blocked, cracked or missing, then remove the blockage or replace the button.
